Allegations of South Africans unlawfully serving in the Israeli Occupation Forces are heading to court. The North Gauteng High Court will hear the matter brought by activist Safoudien Bester and attorney Ziyaad Patel. They want government to be held accountable to its international and domestic obligations. Court papers reveal that ten respondents have been cited, including the Presidency, Home Affairs, police, and the National Prosecuting Authority. The applicants argue that South Africans in the IOF are violating the Regulation of Foreign Military Assistance Act. They say no authorisations have ever been granted for such foreign military service. The case highlights alleged failures of law enforcement to deter crime and uphold the Republic’s laws. Government departments have confirmed they will oppose the application, with papers expected next month.
