In beneficiation plants, downtime is not always caused by equipment failure alone. In many cases, downtime starts much earlier — during the design phase.

A plant may be designed to meet process targets on paper, but if 𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐭, 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬, 𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲, and 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 needs are not considered properly, the result is a facility that becomes harder to operate, harder to maintain, and more expensive to keep running.
When 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐬 focus only on process flow and equipment placement without considering how the plant will actually be 𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝, 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐝, they unintentionally create problems that show up later as repeated downtime.

That is why downtime reduction should begin during plant design, not only after commissioning.
