EradicaTour – one of our ‘Out of the Blue Programs’ are focusing on eliminating unsafe, illegal Pit Toilets in no-fee schools, across South Africa.
We are currently working in the Eastern Cape and have 50 schools, on our list, to reach, just in the Lusikisiki & Mount Ayliff areas.
There are hundreds of schools, that still have really really poor sanitation and pit toilets are an extremely dangerous facility for young children.
Over the past few weeks, we have been at BABHEKE Primary School in Lusikisiki with 267 learners. We have demolished their existing pit toilets, which were in a very poor state and replaced them with non-sewered sanitation (NSS) toilets, with the ability to create fertilizer, to grow food gardens and, at a later stage, convert waste into bio-char for cooking and heating.
Due to severe lack of water access, we have drilled a deep borehole, creating a water distribution system, which will provide water, not only for Babheke School, but for the neighbouring village also.
Their current reliance on rain-water harvesting and a stream is very unsafe. The learners were drinking directly from rain-water harvested water, with no filters or treatment and thus getting sick very often.
Water and sanitation diseases cause 3.5 million deaths each year through Cholera, Typhoid, Dysentery and Diarrheal diseases.
This is equivalent to a jumbo jet crashing every hour!!
Diarrheal diseases ALONE kills more than half a million children, globally, every year, which is a figure higher than deaths caused by HIV, AIDS, Malaria and Measles combined.
Having safe, hygienic sanitation, with water & soap access for washing hands, is one of the most cost effective ways of saving children’s lives.
It is an exceptionally successful public health intervention. It can reduce diarrhea by half, reduce respiratory infections by one third and has a major impact on reducing flu, pneumonia, cholera, ebola and the Covid19 virus.
We need to reach schools that still have unsafe and poor sanitation and water access, it is vital to save lives.
We raise funding by partnering with caring organisations, that understand the need to tackle the sanitation crisis in SA. Please reach out to me if you are one of them: [email protected]
