WARNING : WINDOWS 10 KB5000802 UPDATE CRASHING PCs WHEN PRINTING TO NETWORK PRINTERS

In the last 36 hours Microsoft has rolled out Windows 10 Security Update KB5000802 to systems running version 2004 or 20H2. (On version 1909 the update number is KB5000808). [You can find your version number at Settings -> System -> About]

This update causes Windows 10 to crash when printing to certain network printers (so far reported models are Kyocera, Ricoh, Olivetti, Zebra and similar models…. More could follow). The system throws up A Blue Screen of Death with Stop Error Code “APC_INDEX_MISMATCH for win32kfull.sys”.

At this stage it is not known if this faulty update affects any other printers – so far it appears that USB or WiFi printers are not affected, but this is not certain.

Some users have reported that Microsoft has temporarily halted the rollout of the defective update (called the March 2021 cumulative update) while others say they’re still seeing it on the Windows Update page. All clients are advised where possible to AVOID installing this update.

HOW TO FIX THE PROBLEM IF YOU ENCOUNTER IT:

If you are at all unsure of doing repairs yourself PLEASE CONTACT ME IMMEDIATELY!

Otherwise, you can attempt the repair yourself:
To uninstall the update, follow these steps:
1. Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update
2. Click on ‘View Update History’
3. Click on ‘Uninstall updates’ link.
4. Locate the update and click on ‘Uninstall’.

If this does not work I suggest contacting me - there is a way to remove it using a Command Prompt or PowerShell command, but I would not recommend this if you are at all unfamiliar with Command Line instructions.

If you experience this problem and are able to fix it yourself I would appreciate an email advising the model of the printer involved!!
