If it's a straight kitchen, they must be seperated by a cupboard 600mm in width at least. In a U or L shaped kitchen they can be placed in a triangle formation.

Q... Why do we put a base on the floor and not just make a cupboard that sits on the floor.
EA... in most homes the finishing of the floor is tiles. So normally tiles are cleaned using water and detergent and a mop. So frequent use of water on wood dampens or wet it resulting in rotting of the wood over time. Once the wood is wet there is no coming back it will eventually rot over time. So the use of a base or kick plate now is to save the cupboard from getting wet. We normally finish the base by tiling it's fascia to completely block the water on coming into contact with the wood.
