The Casspir is one of South Africa’s most iconic armoured vehicles, and one of the vehicles that helped shape the global MRAP concept.

Originally developed in South Africa in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Casspir was created to protect crews from landmines while still giving them strong off-road mobility. Its name is widely understood to come from CSIR and SAP (the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and the South African Police) reflecting its South African development roots.

What made the Casspir so recognisable was its high ground clearance and V-shaped hull, designed to direct blast energy away from the crew compartment. This design principle later became a defining feature of many mine-resistant vehicles around the world.

The vehicle was built for tough operational environments, carrying a crew of 2 + 12 passengers, while offering protection and mobility in difficult terrain.
