Tuberculosis (TB) is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis. While TB is usually treatable with a standard course of medicines, multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) develops when the bacteria no longer respond to the two most effective first-line drugs: isoniazid and rifampicin. This makes treatment more complicated, longer, and often more difficult for patients.

• MDR-TB is a form of TB that resists the most powerful medicines used in standard treatment.
• Globally, over 410,000 people developed MDR-TB or rifampicin-resistant TB in 2022.
• Treatment success rates are improving but remain alarmingly low compared to drug-sensitive TB.
• Some strains are even more resistant, called extensively drug-resistant TB (XDR-TB), which resist additional second-line medicines.
