What's Wrong With My Battery?
Fault: My smart charger refuses to charge the battery.
A smart charger doesn't refuse to charge a battery without a reason. Unlike older chargers, it checks the battery's condition before charging begins. If it stops or displays an error, it's usually trying to protect you from a bigger problem.
Here's what it may be telling you:
Reverse polarity
The charger has detected the terminals are connected incorrectly and won't begin charging until they're connected properly.
Deeply discharged battery
The battery voltage has fallen so low that the charger cannot safely recognise it. Some advanced chargers will attempt a recovery cycle. Others will stop immediately.
Sulfation detected
When a battery remains discharged for too long, lead sulfate crystals harden on the plates. This reduces its ability to accept a charge. Some smart chargers can identify this condition and attempt recovery, but severe sulfation is usually irreversible.
Battery beyond recovery
If the charger determines the battery has suffered extensive internal damage or can no longer safely accept a charge, it will refuse to continue. That's not a charger fault. It's a warning that the battery has reached the end of its useful life.
A charger error doesn't always mean the charger is broken.
Sometimes it's giving you the most valuable piece of information it can.
At BatteryCorp, we believe informed customers make better decisions. Our veteran team has spent decades diagnosing battery and charging system faults, and this series is about sharing that knowledge—so you understand what's happening before you spend money replacing parts that may not be the problem.
