Mr James Perkins was a familiar figure in Worcester during the early and mid 20th century. He owned and operated a general dealer’s shop on the corner of Napier and High Streets. The store was often described as dimly lit but well supplied, offering a broad range of everyday items. Mr Perkins was regarded as helpful and was a constant presence behind the counter over many years.
Born in 1870, he spent most of his life in Worcester. By the time he retired, he had worked as a shopkeeper in the town for 73 years. His involvement in the community extended beyond his business. He took part in several local organisations and contributed to the establishment of the Worcester Sports Union, the Mountaineering Club, the Trout Fishing Club, and the Worcester Chamber of Commerce.
In September 1961, the Worcester Standard reported on his 92nd birthday and noted his resignation as secretary of the Worcester Trout Angling Club, a position he had held since 1912. He was subsequently appointed as patron of the club in recognition of his long service.
Mr Perkins died on 5 August 1963 at the age of 93. His wife had predeceased him in 1953. He was survived by a son and a daughter. His shop and long standing presence remained part of the town’s local memory.
