Chasefu Woman Axed to Death by Ex-Lover
By Christopher Miti
A 24-year-old woman has been hacked to death with an axe by her former lover after she was allegedly found with her new boyfriend in a bush area in Chasefu District of Eastern Province.
BAFISKE NKHATA of Zakeyo Village under Chief Magodi was allegedly attacked by MOSES CHIRWA at around 22:00 hours on Friday.
In a statement, Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer ROBERTSON MWEEMBA said the deceased had been visited by her new boyfriend, THOMAS PHIRI, and the two later went into a nearby bush where they engaged in an intimate encounter.
Mr. MWEEMBA said the suspect had been following the pair and became enraged when he found them together.
He said CHIRWA allegedly borrowed an axe and attempted to strike PHIRI.
However, PHIRI ducked, and the blow landed on NKHATA, who died instantly.
Mr. MWEEMBA said the suspect later concealed the blood-stained axe in nearby shrubs before returning to his home in Matemanga Village, while PHIRI fled to his own village.
He said the woman's body was discovered around 08:00 hours on Saturday by her relatives, who reported the matter to police.
Mr. MWEEMBA said police transported the body to Chasefu Mini Hospital Mortuary before launching a manhunt for the suspect.
He added that PHIRI later surrendered himself to police, while CHIRWA was subsequently apprehended.
Mr. MWEEMBA said following questioning, CHIRWA was detained at Chasefu Police Station and is awaiting transfer to Lundazi Police Station.
