Let me remind you because it seems some of you are quick to forget: Not too long ago, a little girl aged 5 years old in Lusaka’s Mutendere area was reported to have been allegedly defiled by 4 different men. The time will come and those men will be taken to court and convicted for what they did to that little girl.

When the conversation about pardoning those tried and convicted for hurting that innocent child, why would any Zambian debate about whether they must be released early from their jail sentence through a presidential pardon?

Where are the men who were here saying “bring back the death penalty”? How come more men are now saying excluding offenders convicted of sexual violence against children is too harsh? What they did to the 5 year old doesn’t qualify them to serve full sentences without parole? Weren’t we championing stiffer punishment together, now that the topic is no longer trending you are saying we must forgive perpetrators by releasing them early.

How then are we going to combat violence against vulnerable people, children and women if we are look warm as a society when it comes to punishment?

For them saying we must extend our Christian heart towards offenders by being lenient and tolerant of early releases. To you I say that forgiveness shouldn’t exempt offenders from serving their sentences in full especially if the offender sexually assaulted a child as little as 5 years old. Let the children who survived these horrific crimes grow up and heal without the slightest chance of meeting their predators. Remember that some of these people are their own family members! Biological fathers, grandfathers, Uncles, brothers, cousins…

Think about the healing process of the survivors! Think about “would be” offenders. When there’s no leniency seen, many will avoid harming little children. 25 years is a long time, keep your hands off our kids!
