I used Copperbelt coins to pay for my nomination fee - Hichilema

PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has described as humbling a Copperbelt-led coin donation by students, marketeers and small-scale miners which was used to pay for his nomination fee ahead of the August 13 general elections.

The Head of State said the contribution, amounting to over K100,000 in coins, was delivered last week after a march from Ndola Teaching Hospital roundabout to the Copperbelt Provincial Administration offices, where supporters handed over the money as a symbolic gesture.

The donors included students from Copperbelt University School of Medicine, Northern Technical College, Mukuba University, Kitwe Vocational Training Centre and ZIBSIP College, alongside marketeers and small-scale miners.

Speaking to a sea of UPND supporters shortly after filing in his nomination papers at Mulungushi International Conference Centre, President Hichilema said the money was used to settle his nomination fee, describing the gesture as deeply appreciated.

“I want at this point to thank the students on the Copperbelt, the small-scale miners on the Copperbelt, the marketeers on the Copperbelt, who raised a small amount of money and contributed over K100,000, which we have used to pay for the nomination today,” President Hichilema said.

The UPND Presidential candidate said he would personally travel to the Copperbelt to appreciate those who made the contribution.

“I will be coming to Copperbelt to have a meeting, to thank you for your contribution,” the President added.

Yesterday, President Hichilema and Vice President Mutale Nalumango were validly nominated as Presidential candidate and running mate respectively in the upcoming August 13 general elections.

Their nominations, placed them in the race to plot one against 13 other presidential aspirants who equally were validly nominated to contest in the elections.
