Police in Chipangali district have detained a 41-year-old man for allegedly ra**ng his 72-year old aunt.

David Banda, of Bauleni village in Chieftainess Mkanda’s area, allegedly sneaked into his aunt’s house at night while she was asleep and r***d her.

Eastern Province police commanding officer Robertson Mweemba said the incident occurred on Tuesday last week around 02:00 hours.

Mr Mweemba said the woman was sleeping in her house alone when the incident happened.

He said the victim went to bed around 20:00 hours and around 02:00 hours, the suspect descended on her.

Mr Mweemba said the senior citizen screamed for help, but before anyone came to her aid, the suspect had molested her.

“She screamed and two of her relatives went to check on her still detained at Lundazi Police and found the suspect in the act. They had to separate him from her,” he said.

Mr Mweemba said the suspect is in police custody and will appear in court soon on the charge of r**e.
