UPOV 91 doesn’t arrive by accident.

This map shows where seed laws are being enforced across the globe.

Zambia is currently being pushed – but we are resisting.

We don’t need a system designed for corporate control. We need policies that support our diversity, our culture, and our food sovereignty.

Happy International Seed Day! Today we celebrate the foundation of our food, our culture, and our future. But in Zambia, that future is under threat.

Two proposed bills aim to replace our current seed laws with UPOV 91 – a system that criminalises farmers, legalises biopiracy, and hands control to a handful of corporations.

We say NO.

Join us over the next two weeks as we explain why UPOV 91 is wrong for Zambia, and how you can help defend our seed sovereignty.

One uncontrolled fire can destroy more than grass -it can destroy an entire ecosystem.
When land is burned carelessly, the impact reaches far beyond the visible flames. It destroys the microorganisms that keep soil healthy, damages trees that protect biodiversity, and threatens the plants and species that depend on a balanced ecosystems to survive. But the consequences do not stop there.
For smallholder farmers, uncontrolled burning can mean:
🔴 Loss of fertile soil
🔴 Reduced crop yields
🔴 Damaged livelihoods
🔴 Greater food insecurity for families and communities
What may seem like a simple act can leave long-lasting scars on both people and the environment.
At Zamkanda, we believe that protecting our land begins with listening to the communities who live closest to it.
Today, Mr. Zacharia Mbaula, a farmer from Shibuyunji District in Central Province, Zambia, shares his experience on the realities of uncontrolled burning.
We all have a role to play in protecting the ecosystems that sustain us.

Strengthening Community Partnerships in Mumbwa
On 14th April 2026, the Zamkanda team had the honour of meeting with Chief Mumba in Mumbwa District, Central Province, Zambia.
We were deeply encouraged by the warm welcome and the Chief’s openness to collaboration. His commitment to community development and environmental stewardship strongly aligns with Zamkanda’s vision.
During our conversation, Chief Mumba expressed enthusiasm about expanding Zamkanda’s work across more villages within his chiefdom, an exciting step towards scaling community-led solutions. He also highlighted the urgent need to restore and protect local forestry, sharing a bold vision of planting 20,000 trees across the area.
At Zamkanda, we are inspired by this shared ambition. Partnerships like these remind us that meaningful, lasting impact is built through trust, collaboration, and a collective commitment to leaving no one behind.
We are grateful for the opportunity and look forward to working together to strengthen both the environment and livelihoods within the community.
