WORLD BANK climate report advises Zambia to prioritize smart and cost-effective led growth.
World bank says there is urgent need for Zambia to implement climate-smart strategies to safeguard the nation’s economy and communities.
Speaking at the launch of the " Zambia country Climate and Development Report (CCDR) report. World Bank Country Manager Dr. Achim Fock noted that the report provides critical insights into how climate change is already reshaping Zambia’s development landscape, offering policymakers a clear evidence base for decision-making. He highlighted that understanding the interplay between climate risks and development priorities is essential for achieving sustainable growth.
Speaking at the same event Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Mike Mposha, emphasized that climate change is already affecting Zambia through droughts, floods, and energy shortages that threaten agriculture, industry, and livelihoods.
He warned that without decisive interventions, Zambia’s GDP could shrink by up to six percent annually by 2050, disproportionately affecting rural populations. The report, he said, provides a roadmap for resilience, recommending measures such as climate-smart agriculture, resilient urban planning, investment in green infrastructure, and human capital development through social protection and green skills.
Mposha called on the private sector to capitalize on opportunities in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and green industry, while urging international partners to continue supporting Zambia’s low-carbon, climate-resilient transition.
IFC Country Manager Madalo Minofu also spoke at the event, highlighting the report’s potential to guide private sector investment and innovation in Zambia’s green economy.
Minofu emphasized that by aligning business strategies with the report’s recommendations, companies can contribute to inclusive growth while addressing climate risks.
Together, the speakers painted a picture of both the challenges and opportunities ahead, underscoring that climate action and development are complementary goals that require urgent, coordinated effort across government, business, and international partners.
