When the Journey to School Puts Children at Risk
Child Rescue Foundation
For many children in Chisompola Village, Chisankane Ward, Kafue District, the journey to school is not only long but it is also unsafe.
Children, particularly girls and younger learners, are required to walk long distances through isolated routes to access education. During the rainy season and winter months, this risk is heightened as days grow shorter and children often return home in darkness.
These conditions expose children to serious child protection risks, including:
• Sexual violence and harassment
• Physical harm and exploitation
• Fear and psychological distress
• Early school dropout as a protective response by families.
Even where school feeding programmes exist, safety risks along the journey undermine their impact. A child who is afraid or harmed on the way to school cannot learn, thrive, or remain in the education system.
At Child Rescue Foundation, child protection is inseparable from education. A school that is too far away is not just an education issue, it is a safeguarding issue.
The allocation of land for a community school in Chisompola Village, under the leadership of Headman Chisompola, represents a critical intervention to reduce exposure to violence, strengthen child safety, and keep children, especially girls, in school.
📌 Protection Impact for Organizations, individuals, and Partners Supporting this community school will contribute to:
• Reduced exposure to violence and abuse
• Improved safety for girls and vulnerable children
• Increased school attendance and retention
• Stronger community-based child protection systems
Education should never place a child in danger. Safety must come first.

What Is Human Trafficking?
Human Trafficking: Modern Slavery in Plain Sight
Human trafficking is the illegal trade of people for exploitation. It is often hidden in plain sight and involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to control individuals for purposes such as:
Sexual exploitation
Domestic servitude
Forced labor
Child or forced marriage
Victims of human trafficking can be children, women, or men. This crime does not only happen “far away” it occurs in our communities, homes, schools, and workplaces.
This online awareness campaign is shared in memory of Saint Josephine Bakhita, a Sudanese woman who survived slavery and whose life reminds us of the urgent need to protect the vulnerable.
Awareness is the first step to prevention.
This week, we commit to learning, speaking out, and protecting the vulnerable.
