STOP WRITING “E.T.C” — THIS POST IS A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

My dear teachers and students, gather here small 🤏
Let us settle this grammar wahala once and for all before it embarrasses us in exam hall
So yesterday in my home lesson class, a student boldly wrote on the board:

❌ We should buy sugar, milk, bread, E.T.C.

I paused.
I smiled like a calm professional teacher
Then I asked politely:
“My dear, what is the full meaning of your E.T.C?”
Without fear, without shame, he replied:

👉 “Extra Things Considered”

I held my head.
The marker nearly fell from my hand
So please, let this post save lives and grades today 😄👇
THE CORRECT FORM IS: etc. ✅

Not E.T.C.

Not e.t.c.

Just etc.

It comes from a Latin phrase: et cetera
Meaning: “and other things” / “and so on.”
Teacher-style breakdown 📚

Et = and

Cetera = other things

Together → et cetera = and other things

Now listen very well o 👂
1️⃣ It’s etc., not E.T.C — we are not naming a company

2️⃣ Don’t write “and etc.” — that’s and and

3️⃣ Use etc. for things, not human beings 🙏

1. I need to buy sugar, milk, bread, etc.
2. We learnt nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc.
3. Please bring books, pens, erasers, etc.

LUSAKA, Thursday, 4th December, 2025. The Examinations Council of Zambia
wishes to clarify that the registration period of candidates for the 2026 School Examination Session is Monday 10th November, 2025 to Friday, 6th March, 2026.
Kindly be advised as such.
