🇿🇲 WHAT IS THE ROLE OF A MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT IN ZAMBIA?

Many people misunderstand the role of a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is not a contractor, not a donor, and not a personal financier of a constituency.

So what exactly is their role?

1. LAW MAKING (LEGISLATION)
An MP sits in Parliament to make, amend, and repeal laws that govern the country. This is their primary constitutional duty.

2. REPRESENTATION
An MP represents the people of their constituency in national discussions.
They take your concerns, challenges, and aspirations to Parliament and ensure your voice is heard.

3. OVERSIGHT
An MP provides checks and balances on the Executive (government).
They question decisions, demand accountability, and ensure public resources are used correctly.

4. BUDGET APPROVAL
Every year, MPs debate and approve the national budget—deciding how your taxes are allocated across sectors like health, education, and infrastructure.

5. POLICY ADVOCACY
A strong MP pushes for policies that bring development to their constituency—schools, clinics, roads—by influencing government priorities, not by personally funding projects.

LET’S BE CLEAR

If we reduce MPs to “people who give handouts,” we weaken the entire system of governance.

An effective MP is one who:

✔ Holds government accountable
✔ Delivers results through systems—not personal money
