[22/10, 20:33] J&J Rabbitry: Here i am.
1. Rabbits thrive in any environment, but their preffered environment is that with low temperatures as they struggle to breath in high temperatures. So to solve this challenge, we encourage farmers to put their cages (preffered way of keeping them than dip litter) under the shed where temperatures are regulated and also the cages should be well ventilated open on all sides for circulation of fresh air. During summer is when we need to protect our rabbits from extreme high temps. During winter we only need to make sure the newly born are protected from the extreme cold temps as they are the ones prone to these conditions and we do so by putting nest boxes where the mother plucks it's fur and cover its kits. I will send some pics for demo.
2. Amount of rabbits to start with depends on whether you have enough theoretical and practical knowledge of how to keep rabbits coz it's quite a technical farming venture. For those starting i would advise you start small while gaining experience on the overall management of rabbits from mating, kindling, weaning stage up to slaughtering. If you grow rapidly chances are you will fall again rapidly that is if you overlook the need for knowledge and experience. So starting small will help you make small losses as well that you will use as school fees along the way. Another way if you want to grow big instantly is to look for someone knowledgeable to manage your venture while paying them for the job, that way you will be having probably "little" to do as you will be managing someone who is managing your rabbitry. This then means you will need to have the financial muscle for the venture to succeed, but if you do not have the financial resources it then means you have to be patient and grow organically. Both ways of doing things have their own advantages and disadvantages alike.
3. Probably we might not say there are specific funders for rabbit projects, but farming projects in general are being supported by the gvt of Zimbabwe towards achieving the goals of NSD 1 and 2 small and big livestock production upscaling and rabbits are now recognized as livestock worthy talking about due to the wonderful works of Zicobra and other renowned rabbit farmers, making enough noise for recognition. There are banks that i know that give Agric projects funding the likes of empower Bank (youth focused) Women's bank (women focused) and Agri bank. There are some banks as well but these give personal loans that you can then channel towards your rabbitry venture. But those 3 are mainly focused on Agriculture. Empower Bank has better terms for youth, same as women's bank for women. But you need to have a detailed business proposal for consideration.
4. Tsuro nembira can be kept pamwe chete, but the downside of mbira is they eat like crazy and they will definitely dig deep into your pocket on feed that is if you are using pellets. I'm not so sure about diseases that they can share, but it's always best practice to seperate the two for proper biosecurity.
Rabbits have a better market than mbira for several reasons one of them being the size of the carcass and price it can fetch.
5. Requirements for rearing place.
Like i said earlier, there are two methods of rearing rabbits. The cage system which is mainly controlled breeding or the dip litter system (kuchengeta like broilers). We recommend to use the cage system for commercial purposes since it has many benefits compared to the latter. Cage system is self cleaning, meaning there is no accumulation of droppings inside the cage and it makes cleaning easier. Accumulation of droppings will harbor disease causing organisms, hence we encourage hygiene in rabbits to avoid common disease like ear canker and mange or even coccidiosis. So you can only imagine sweeping the floor everyday if you are doing the dip litter system. Also space utilization is more efficient with the cage system as you can build 3tiers of a cage on a space of meters where you intend to keep let's say 20 rabbits and you can multiply that number by 3 on the same space therefore efficiently utilizing the available space.
Controlled breeding will also help you will easily coming up with statistics of how your rabbits are performing in terms of litter size, mothering abilities, growth rate of kits, feed conversion rate, meat to bone ratio. This data will help you do away with non performing rabbits that will probably make you a loss if you continue keeping them. So the cage system will make tabulation of all this easier as it makes record keeping quite easier.
We have a lot of people all over Zimbabwe who make cages be it steel cages or wooden ones, even those who build housing for dip litter depending on your location. Articles to do with rabbits are found all over the internet, i will send some books for reference in here so that you people can study.
For any questions you can direct them to me, if you want physical visits i will you to other renowned farmers in case you are not within my proximity.
6. Rabbit business is a well paying venture, provided you are doing it the right way but it is also a game of numbers. Just like in any other business, it's down to the owner to make things happen for your venture. We have people crying kuti matuckshop haibhadhare but we have people who have bought cars and built houses with the same business. How many big retail shops have opened and closed but OK and TM are still surviving? Too many. You have got to be creative to make sure your name is known out there for good rabbit products be it breeding stock or meat. After having be able to keep rabbits successfully, your next step should be marketing and you need to do it innovatively and vigorously. No one will come and sell your produce for you for nothing. Buyers you find looking for rabbit meat are the ones that decide how much they want to pay for your rabbits but those that you pitch the idea of rabbits to, you have bargaining power. So please take note, the success of this venture is solely down to you. Even gold, the most precious and sought after mineral some are losing out and some are making it.
7. We have plenty of people doing it on a commercial level and it's paying out. I am not privy to disclose their names without first talking to them for reference.
