We repair Laptop Motherboards and we believe we are good at it.

We work together with other technicians around town to bring laptops back to life, but before you you bring it to us you may attempt to repair it yourself.

Here are a few dos and don'ts to avoid turning a simple repair into a complex job or totally ruining the board beyond repair.

Don't randomly bridge MOSFETs

MOSFETs are there for a reason. If they are not letting power through, it means that something is wrong. Address the root cause.
E.g if a high side MOSFET for CPU supply is shorted to the main power rail, you will drive 19 volts into a processor that uses a maximum of 1.2 volts making the board irreparable.

Don't Randomly change Bios Chips

Just because two motherboards look similar or share the same board number, it doesn't mean that the bios is compatible.

Two main elements that must match are: BID and CPU microcode. This important data is contained in the original bios chip.
When you have tried another bios chip and failed to get the motherboard to work, put the originak chip back. It will help in finding the correct bios file for your motherboard.

Don't Randomly Heat Chips i.e Graphics Chip, PCH, CPU or EC (startup chip)

When a motherboard does not have display (in our experience) it is rarely the Graphics Chip that has a problem.
There are several tests that should be done first before concluding that chips need reflow.
Oftentimes motherboards that could have been easily repaired end up junked by unnecessarily cooking and killing chips.

Do take a pic before cleaning liquid damaged motherboards

Sometimes just cleaning a liquid damaged motherboard is enough to get it working again, sometimes it's not.

We repair motherboards under microscope but sometimes when a motherboard has been cleaned, it is difficult to see where the damage was.
A picture of the uncleaned board tells a story of which other parts that could have been affected.
