Zimbabwe's AI traffic cameras caught 15,000 drivers in just weeks.
The technology works. The legal framework to back it up? That is a different story.
Africa is investing $2.1 billion in AI surveillance systems. But across the continent, including Zimbabwe and South Africa, the laws governing whether that camera footage can actually hold up in court are still catching up.
This week's Friday Tech Talk breaks down what is being built, what the law currently says, and what it means for organisations operating their own security systems.

BREAKING: The UK has banned social media for all under-16s.
Platforms: TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, Facebook, X. In force from early 2027. Heavy fines for non-compliant platforms. WhatsApp is exempt. But this is a global wave, not a UK story. Australia (Dec 2025), France, Spain, Denmark, Canada last week. And now the UK.
Africa is moving too. Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Gabon, and the African Union are all in motion.

The battle over online child safety is entering a new phase, and this time governments are targeting the devices themselves.
The UK has given major technology companies, including Apple and Google, a clear message: do more to prevent children from creating, sharing, or accessing harmful sexual content online. Regulators want stronger protections built directly into smartphones, tablets, messaging platforms, and social media services.
The move comes amid growing concerns over the rise of AI-generated explicit content, online grooming, sextortion, and the ease with which minors can encounter harmful material on the internet. For policymakers, the argument is simple: if technology can identify spam, malware, and scams, it should also be able to better protect children.
But not everyone is convinced.
Critics warn that increasing device-level monitoring could create a slippery slope toward digital surveillance. Where is the line between protecting children and scanning private communications? How much access should governments and technology companies have to our devices in the name of safety?
The debate is becoming global. Countries such as Australia have pursued age restrictions on social media, while Zimbabwe recently adopted a child online protection policy focused on education, awareness, and shared responsibility rather than outright bans.
The challenge facing every nation is the same: how do we keep children safe online without sacrificing privacy and digital freedoms for everyone else?
