Our guide to buying a computer in 2020:

1) Never buy anything that is not at least a Core-i3 or higher. The processor is one of the key components and buying anything which has a low-end processor locks you into a slow computing experience.

2) Buy a recent generation computer. Computer processors have generations so please check the generation before you purchase. The minimum you can get away with and still work with is a 6th generation processor. Anything less will be a trial in patiently waiting for the system to catch up with you.

3) Get a laptop with at least 8Gb of memory. Windows loves memory and the more you have the better your experience will be. 16Gb is ideal if you run many apps at the same time or browse the internet a lot.

4) If possible look into buying an SSD and get rid of the mechanical hard drive. Hard drive thrashing is real and you will notice an improvement when you upgrade to an SSD. Please get a good brand SSD as well.

5) Buy a brand name you recognise. When your computer eventually packs up, it is easier to get spares on a common brand than an uncommon one.

6) Install only the apps you need. Avoid installing everything you see on the internet. A lot of Freeware and Shareware apps install other apps so please avoid them as much as possible.

7) Windows Defender is not security. Please install a protection suite. They are cheap but they will do more for you than you will ever know.

8) Do not buy a computer that you can't take back if you have a problem. A lot of secondhand computers were stolen so be careful who you buy from

9) Avoid dodgy websites. There are a lot of websites which install apps on your computer. Please avoid them at all costs. If you have to visit them then make sure you have an antivirus and a browser add-on like AdBlock to stop new pages opening up.

10) If you can afford it, buy a brand new laptop. You are probably going to use it daily for 3 to 5 years so please buy a decent new laptop. Over time you will realise that it will cost you less than a secondhand computer
