As we approach the 2nd of April, you may come across campaigns for autism awareness day such us the “Light It Up Blue” campaign or the puzzle piece symbol....here’s the thing, a lot of these campaigns depict autism as a “disease” or “illness” that needs to be cured. It is important to be aware of the negative connotations associated with the puzzle piece symbol in relation to autism. Using this symbol suggests that autistic individuals have flaws, defects or are incomplete.
These campaigns have faced criticism for their focus on promoting awareness instead of acceptance, implying that autistic individuals pose a ‘threat’ to society. This perspective is harmful and dehumanising and reinforces harmful stereotypes and misunderstandings about autism, and fails to recognise that autistic individuals have their own unique strengths and abilities.
So I ask you to please consider promoting acceptance, understanding, advocacy and embrace neurodiversity. Celebrate unique strengths and talents and let's work towards creating a more inclusive and supportive society for all individuals, regardless of differences, not just on the 2nd of April, but always.
