Such great news 🗞️ 🏳️🌈
For many people, welcoming a child is one of life’s greatest joys - but getting to that moment isn’t always easy.
More Western Australians than ever are turning to fertility care or surrogacy to help make their dream of becoming parents possible.
Through our new Assisted Reproductive Technology & Surrogacy Bill - which just passed through Parliament - we're making it easier for Western Australians to start a family.
The legislation removes barriers that have stood in the way of too many people who dream of becoming parents.
These changes open up access to ART and surrogacy for couples and single people who are struggling to conceive - including members of the LGBTQIA+ community - by removing the requirement to prove medical infertility.
The laws also make reciprocal IVF more accessible, and support people who need to preserve their fertility before undergoing medical treatment that could affect their ability to have children in the future.
While ART is generally available to those 18 and over, there will now be exceptions for young people who need fertility preservation for medical reasons - giving them a chance to protect their future options.
And importantly, these reforms strengthen the rights of donor-conceived people.
They ensure individuals can access information about their genetic and social heritage, and give donors and intended parents clearer access to the information they need - along with stronger safeguards around consent for the use of donated reproductive material.
These changes are about compassion, fairness, and giving more Western Australians the chance to build the families they’ve always hoped for.
