Urology Innovations Canada
Serving patients across Canada and internationally.
There are two approaches to prostate biopsy: transre**al and transperineal.
With a transre**al biopsy, the needle passes through the re**al wall before entering the prostate. With a transperineal biopsy, the needle passes directly through the skin between the sc***um and re**um into the prostate.
At UIC, we perform only transperineal prostate biopsies because this approach has been associated with lower rates of infection and bleeding compared with traditional transre**al biopsy.
For us, prostate cancer care means thinking about precision and quality of life at every step — starting with the biopsy.

A recent NanoKnife patient who travelled from B.C. to Toronto shared this kind review:
“The service and staff were first class from start to finish. When I first enquired about the surgery online, Dr. Barkin called me on a Sunday afternoon to answer all my queries… All correspondence with Dr. Barkin, Mary, Vanita and Jennifer was prompt, polite and thorough, before, during and after my procedure… Overall, I cannot recommend Dr. Barkin and his team enough.”
Thank you, Mark, for your generous words and for trusting the Urology Innovations Canada team with your care.
Modern prostate cancer treatment is increasingly focused on achieving effective results with less disruption to quality of life.
Whenever appropriate, minimally invasive focal treatment can help men avoid major surgery, long hospital stays, and extended recovery — while still effectively treating localized prostate cancer.
At UIC, our focus is always precision, safety, and preserving function whenever possible.

Like many of our patients, Terry travelled from Calgary to UIC in Toronto for his NanoKnife (IRE) treatment of localized prostate cancer.
Five months later, he shared these follow-up results:
• PSA decreased from 15.5 to 1.8
• Follow-up MRI showed that the lesions were gone
• No urinary incontinence
• No erectile dysfunction
For the right candidate, focal treatment can offer meaningful cancer control without compromising the life you want to keep living.

Ongoing collaboration with experts in focal therapy helps refine treatment planning, improve precision, and continue advancing care for carefully selected men here in Toronto.
It’s always valuable to be part of the global conversations shaping the future of focal treatment.
Before treatment, comes the most important step: careful patient selection.
At UIC, every case is reviewed first to determine whether focal therapy is truly the right fit.
For localized prostate cancer, the best outcomes start with choosing the right patients — not simply choosing a technology.

Twenty years ago, on March 12, 2006, we performed North America's first HIFU treatment for prostate cancer.

• Not every localized prostate cancer requires radical treatment
• Precision and patient selection matter more than technology alone
• MRI fusion biopsy changed how accurately we diagnose and plan focal treatment
• Quality of life — including urinary and sexual function — must remain central
• For carefully selected patients, focal treatment can offer cancer control while preserving future options
The most common thing we still hear from men after diagnosis:
"I didn’t realize I had other options."
For men with localized prostate cancer, understanding all available treatment pathways is an important first step.

Choosing between HIFU and NanoKnife isn't about personal preference — it's about precision.
Both treatments destroy cancer while preserving urinary and sexual function, but they do so in very different ways.
At Urology Innovations Canada, our specialists use advanced imaging and biopsy data to determine which energy source — thermal (HIFU) or electrical (NanoKnife) — will target your prostate cancer most effectively.
